Why can't a user edit a file even if they are in a group?

ubuntu

I do LAMP, I do commands

chown -R www-data.www-data /var/www/laravel
chmod -R 755 /var/www/laravel
chmod -R 777 /var/www/laravel/storage

but now I can’t make changes to files via ftp\sftp, I added myself to the www-data group,
sudo usermod -aG www-data user
but I still can’t edit
file permissions,


what am I doing wrong?

Did you re-login after joining the group?
