Ubuntu 14.04 GUI won't load, what should I do?

Ubuntu does not load ... the logo hangs and dots run under it and that's it. 14.04.
ctrl+alt+fX - normally starts up.

@gaucer

what does dmesg say? What video card? What firewood? Bitness of the system?
You can also press Esc when you turn it on, this should show the boot process and you can see exactly where it stops.
Or in the kernel parameters, in grub, remove quiet

See what's on the console/logs.
Most likely, it is waiting for disks to be mounted (here is a classic plug - a dual-boot with Windows, mounting a Windows disk via fstab and a Windows session sent to hibernation) or network configuration.

Read logs
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
/var/log/syslog
and display manager's log, I don't know which one is default in ubuntu.
Just written
