I thought that someone had already answered yes, but the answer was not among the above (although I read diagonally).
The problem is that people make mistakes, sometimes entering their address incorrectly. Yes, autocomplete does not work everywhere and always (it's trite because the name of the input is different), the computer is not necessarily his own, a person chooses not to remember such data, etc.
Above people say that it doesn't matter if the user makes a mistake. However, these people, apparently, do not register so often or simply did not get into problem situations.
And the problem can be as simple as two fingers and is called: "sorry, this username is already taken."
Yes Yes! Most services when registering offer to enter a login, nickname and other unique information. If you enter the wrong email address and the correct unique information, then it will no longer be possible to register under your nickname, indicating your wallet, indicating your user address on lastfm or habré, etc.
The biggest problem is when you work with minimalistic services where there is no need to register, but where it is necessary to indicate the mail after all actions so that they are not lost or receive notifications. Indicate the wrong soap - write wasted.

Everything is simple. I speak as a developer. In general, the customer comes and says:
- Here is the registration form, the fields are such, such, mail twice.
— And why twice mail something? Doesn't it annoy you?
- Not. You do not understand. This is the standard. Everyone does it, we are worse or something.
- What is the standard? Who?
- Everyone has! All sites must be entered twice. You don't know anything about the internet at all, do you? What are we paying you for?
- Okay, let's do it twice.
This is how the mail appears twice, the mandatory confirmation by e-mail, the eye-catching captchas and “remove those long hyphens”.

As if in the fact that the user does not make a mistake when entering and writes the correct mail, which will receive confirmation of registration. In fact, this is nonsense, since almost always the mail appears in the drop-down list using the browser.

Usually, a letter is sent to the mail with a confirmation link, so if you enter an erroneous address, nothing bad will happen anyway.
And if you follow this logic of confirmation by duplication, then you need to ask for all the data to be entered twice :) - name, date of birth, and so on. In short, you don't have to do this.

Profit in reducing the cost of technical support.

Once upon a time, the screens were pale, pale, and the keyboards were small, small, and users missed the buttons and entered data in the wrong fields, and in order to get the user's mail for sure, they had to add two or more fields for entering email. It's true, I've heard it told to me.

I do not see the point, in general, of duplicating fields. I don’t do it myself and always discourage others.

If the question is about profit, then this is so:
Introduction of the second field.
Pants.

Profit.
But seriously, there is no profit. Even if we assume the correct confirmation, then Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V works with a bang.

On a set, for example, forums on an Internet, for some reason, they require further activation by soap when registering. And the vast majority of them do not use any OpenID - each requires its own registration.
A person, IMHO, tends to type his email quickly, because. he probably did this more than one hundred times (unlike the password, which is entered more carefully, because the password is not visible when entered and they will not let you in with the wrong one) and if anything, he can check it visually. But in long addresses (or with crooked hands) it is not surprising to make a mistake, for example, in neighboring letters in such a way that it is unremarkable.
Well, a person entered as his legal address [email protected] or [email protected], and then he sits wondering: either the mail does not go well, or this mail service is banned on the forum (and mail.ru was often banned earlier). He goes back to the forum, but it is impossible to register again, the nickname is busy. And do not enter the profile, and do not change the address, because. the account is not activated... The circle is closed.
From ctrl-c / v, essno, it will not save, but this is on the user's conscience. And browser autocomplete doesn't always work.
In general, a double field for soap as a double field for a password is the simplest check for a fool. For it was not in vain that it appeared over time, the statistics showed ... By the way, I myself hit it a couple of times.

As a user, these forms always piss me off. I make copy-paste - extra gestures. As a developer, I also see no point in this garbage.
In general, the best registration form is the Email field and the Continue button. The password is automatically made and sent to the soap, a login session is started in the cookies, and at the second step the missing fields are specified as little as possible so as not to distract the person from his goal of getting inside.
And if there is a typo in the soap, then I'm sorry. Because of one crooked-paw to strain a bunch of people with an extra field ... why?

there were a couple of cases when an order came through the feedback form, you answered an e-mail, and in response from the mail server - the box does not exist, that is, the client most likely just made a mistake in writing the box, but is ready to place an order, but at the same time there is no no feedback. annoying situation :)
of course I would like to identify the user as unobtrusively as possible

I remember how I registered on one forum, and entered the email incorrectly - the letter did not come, the admins could not be reached.

I like how on Nokia 2720, when adding a mailbox, you need to enter a password 2 times. An already existing password, of course. Where are the lovers of ctrl c / v? :)

So really, how to create a second line for entering e-mail during registration?
