Shops do not like to trade at a loss. For what they bought - for so much (+ extra charge) and they will sell. Look for some Core 2 Quad Q6600. How do you like a ten-year veteran for 7 thousand?
And at the time of their births, these were products in principle of different classes. Multi-socket configurations are traditionally more expensive. Plus, compare the amount of memory supported. Because radically different selling prices.

Yes, they planted. Even hetzner rented 64G machines for a penny then (well, relative pennies, 200 euros for such a config was then nothing).
