Which macbook to get for Java development?
Good time, dear inhabitants of this wonderful forum :)
I immediately apologize for creating a question on a rather hackneyed topic, but the problem is that she was beaten a long time ago, and now she has healed and again demands a fight.
To start with, I am currently actively studying the java programming language, and due to a recent departure, I realized that it is time for my old laptop from the well-known lenovo company to rest, because during the short week that I was away from home, he managed to let down as much as twice, tightly hovering. This sore was treated with a forced reboot, which, unfortunately, took some developments into oblivion.
Enough lyrics, let's get down to business.
After reading the forums, reviews and reviews for a short time, I realized that it is worth turning your eyes to the creation of Apple.
But then a dilemma arose, because, as you already understood, there were several applicants:
1) MacBook Air 13", Core i5 - 1.6 (2.7) GHz, 8 GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 6000, 128 GB SSD for the price for today - 76190 rubles
2)MacBook Pro 13 "with Retina, Core i5 - 2.7 (3.1) GHz, 8 GB RAM, Intel Iris Graphics 6100, 128 GB SSD for 89990 rubles.
Actually 13 inches because I want a compact car (who am I kidding, I'm just a rogue and won't pull 15 :))
I don't really bother about the amount of memory, because there is a personal home cloud of 1 TB.
On the one hand, I don’t want to overpay for Pro, but on the other hand, if there is something for it, then why not.
From you, dear forum users, I would like to know if there is a difference between the performance of these machines in development environments (in my case, this is Intellij IDEA). Does it make sense at all in 8 GB for Air, and also does it need an i7? And how much the presence or absence of a Retina display affects the eyes and their fatigue.
Thanks in advance.
PS I foresee that there will be people who will say that the replacement can be cheaper and without an apple on the case (and they will notice this quite rightly), but here I have a weighty argument with plans for the future, which may be closely related to development for iOS .

So that you have at least a rough idea,
I'll show you how on mac book pro 15 retina
Under each open application there is a dot from the bottom
, the hard volume has not risen higher than this level for 8 months, but the volume less can cause inconvenience due to the backups that the system makes (so that you work didn’t lose when the system crashed) you just have to clean it more often and not keep as much extra as I do at home (another 80 gigs can be freed). Bootcamp is a partition for windows, it’s naked, there’s nothing superfluous there, you can also figure it out, but I switched to it only in the first couple of months .. now, well, everything is under the poppy.
Memory load (+- you can free up a couple of gigs of cache)
if you still open PS, it will be completely clogged, and in the sketch I have a file open for 15+ landings and 30+ tabs in safari.
CPU usage above 40% only jumps when launching applications
At this level, if you open several files at once in a web storm and jump through the gulp tree.
Personal feeling of lags is 0, everything works very quickly, if there are performance problems, then they are rather internal software.
Retina is very cool, but when buying, it is very desirable to turn it on, put black wallpapers on the screen and look at every millimeter for white dots, I got a couple of pieces a month later, now there are already a bunch of about a hundred, it doesn’t interfere with work, and even on bright areas they are not visible, but it is annoying that they are for such a price ..
Small luminous ..
Now I think based on this you can figure out what you need, success.
Why do you need to learn java? Judging by the question you have and so life was a success.
a large display for a ninuzhon programmer -> 13" is ideal! market.
you
will run around work/hackathons/cowokings
.
leaks, in IDEI there is in the settings the maximum size of the memory used (usually no more than 1-2 gigs, depending on the settings), so even on an 8 gig poppy, the memory is not completely clogged
. for IDEI is important
calamus for those who just sit in the browser, and not prog.
Air, 13", i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD - the configuration that I chose for myself, and I don’t regret it at all. The performance is enough for comfortable work. You can also take it with a 128 SSD if you’re sure that’s enough.
Air or Proshka - it's a matter of use.If you have it at home, you can take the Pro.And as a frequently carried with you, the Air is better.
Of course you need to take a flash. It is possible without a discrete video card, but a firmware. More memory, faster percent.
I now go with Air from point 1. Enough for everything :)
But still, take a flash
I strongly advise the retinal plug, your eyes will thank you. As for the RAM, it's up to you, but I'll tell you from personal experience: chrome flows when debugging, JetBrains' favorite idea flows. So if you do not code console utilities in notepad, then 16 is better.
What if... you don't buy a Macbook?
Without this retina packaging, a 15" MacBook is 1440 pixels. A non-Macbook is 1920 pixels. If there is no external monitor, then 1440 real pixels is not enough. And 1920 is all right. And on 15" inches - all right, 17" is already better (but I'm not ready to take 17" with me on trips).
Modern macbooks have a glossy screen. Yes, this is solved with a matte film, but you can immediately buy a laptop with a matte display.
In modern macbooks, it will not even be possible to increase the amount of memory, and Java loves it. 8GB is not always enough for comfortable work, you need 16. It will not work and increase the volume of SSD, but it will also come in handy. Especially if you need a virtual machine with Windows. For a "regular" laptop, memory and SSD can be increased without problems. For example, I have a gaming MSI GE60. I had to take the gaming one, because I wanted an i7 processor. And yes, the i7 processor is good. And yes, I immediately changed the 750GB screw to a 256GB SSD. And after a year and a half, when it became crowded - on a 512GB SSD. And in another year and a half, when it goes on sale, I will rip out these 512GB SSDs and put them in a new laptop with an even more powerful and even more energy efficient processor.
If, despite the voice of reason, you choose a Macbook, then if you constantly travel with a laptop - take air, if you do not travel - pro. And only 15 "pro, a small screen is simply not enough if you do not use an external monitor. In my opinion, so :)
