Which free antivirus to choose for a parent's computer?

My parents have a computer that I set up 2 years ago and it honestly worked. It had free Avast on it, it was updated and there was happiness. Only now, 2 years later, it turned out that everything is very slow, Avast constantly asks to buy itself (while slowing down even more) and I began to think that there might be something better. Tell me, who uses what for such purposes?

Put parents Microsoft Security Essentials, and you will not know the problems. The system does not load, it does not bother with windows. He may not be the most lively, but your parents are probably not walkers in the most haunted places of the Internet.
Most importantly, do not forget to set up a full scan once a week.
Z.Y. If not in the know, then MSE is a free antivirus from MS. Free for users of a legal copy of the OS.

Avast (you need to renew the free key once a year).

A year ago I installed Fedora 14 for my older brother.
I haven't looked back since.
Prior to that, about once a month had to cesspool.

For acquaintances who are poorly versed in computers, I put this - www.avira.com/ru/avira-free-antivirus

Same problem. I do not recommend Microsoft Security Essentials - a couple of months ago I myself caught a sickly virus with it, right from the browser. Of course, the vulnerability was in the browser, but if Kaspersky had stood then, I'm 99% sure that he would have fixed this virus. Now there is avast, firefox browser + noscript extension. It's the same for parents. I explain why not to install Linux for my parents:
1. I will soon go to the army, I can’t help at all
2. The interface is not very friendly to “dummies”
3. There may be bugs with video / movie playback, recording to disks (standard operations)
4 Mom needs Microsoft Word, she was going to study it. Not an option on Vine - there is a high probability that something will glitch + the fonts seem to be smeared sometimes.

I am for Microsoft Security Essentials - bug-free, inconspicuous, convenient, understandable, in Russian.
And another tip, except for the antivirus. If you haven't already, make a user account with limited rights, and let them enter the password for the admin account, especially not very often.

I think AVG is an excellent free antivirus for you, I used it myself at home, my wife still has it.

I would like to suggest an alternative. But it's not for all parents. If they just play small toys and make documents, then it's easier to install Linux and forget it. Ubuntu is easier to install than Windows, although you can get confused with something else. In order not to be very scared, you can install Kubuntu.

Create a parent user with limited rights (not Administrator).

Remove admin rights from parents. put ms essentials plus avast/avira.
Set up auto-update and automatic full check of both and reboot if necessary.
Go through ccleaner and clean everything.
If you put the seven and the simplest admin password on the admin (your) account, then there will be many times less problems.
and oh yes. defragment all drives.
and buy a 60 gigabyte ssd for the system already :)
and they will be happy for several years.
and yes, set up auto-backups

AVG Free 2012. Quite normal. Animals catches, updated automatically. If you remove additional checkmarks from the installation, then it's generally nice.
In combination with the lack of admin rights, the standard Windows firewall and thematic suggestion to the user, it gives quite decent protection in terms of software minimalism;).
It has the ability to quietly install and update.
Cons:
— Heavy, for old machines ordeal;
- BSOD once in a millennium (saves booting in safe mode and deleting antivirus driver files + reinstalling);
- not ideal for corporate use due to licensing conditions.

Look at the results for antiviruses from various large companies that are testing them. For example:
www.av-comparatives.org/
www.av-test.org/en/home/
www.virusbtn.com/index
Actually the result is on the face. Avira, Avg, Bitdefender are in the top with small margins from each other in various parameters. Free and easy to use. With the same results there are Nod32 and Kaspersky, but they are paid and heavy for the system. Kaspersky at least for sure. So try one of the three that I gave, I think it will help.
I've been using Avira for a long time. A long time ago. Windows has been working stably for several years. Viruses block with a bang. Good and web protection.
Avira's truth sometimes pops up ads too. But it doesn't stress. Yes, and it rarely happens.
There are quite a few problems with Avast. Yes, and in terms of characteristics, it is inferior to many.
I can’t say anything about Avg and Bitdefender, but people generally use it and are quite satisfied.
