Take joomla, a new branch 4.x has been released as there is a lot of "tasty" for the developer, in February 4.1 more new features will be released.

The comment correctly asked: for what purpose? Joomla is a tool that you need to know how to use. Under the hood, it has a full-fledged PHP framework, albeit a little outdated, with PSR standards. If you are not a developer, but are making online store sites, then with vp it will probably be faster at the start. But to achieve the desired quality then it will take more effort. A clean vp with a clean woocommerce takes about 180 mb of code. They just put them on and that's it. Pure joomla with the same joomshopping takes about 35 mb of code. Where in the end it will be easier to finish, what do you think? Yes, and WordPress does not have an MVC structure, so Lara or Symphony is often connected under its hood. Then why is vp needed? Joomla doesn't have this problem. The question itself should sound a little different: "what is better and more convenient to maintain and develop in the long term?"

WP of course, what is there to think about.
From CMS for small and medium projects, only one thing is required IMHO - popularity.
So that later you don’t have to look for some modules like webp, yml, seo, etc. More out of the box solutions. More templates. More answers on the forums, more specialists, means cheaper improvements, etc.
Therefore, just see what is popular there now: https://itrack.ru/research/cmsrate/
WP = 43% of all sites, Joomla = 9%
I think everything is clear?
It would not be superfluous to look at the dynamics of the development of CMS popularity over the period in order to understand which way the wind is blowing.
Since 2013, WP has been steadily growing, Joomla has been steadily falling - https://itrack.ru/research/cmsrate/dynamic/11/60/
We can say that WP is growing at the expense of Joomla ))) I myself used to work with joomla, until I switched to WP, I have never regretted it.

For a large online store - Bitrix.
For small and private businesses - Wordpress and Opencart.
In general, recently my choice remains for Wordpress (practical for any project). Since there are quite a lot of developers and freelancers for this CMS. That is, for the completion of your site, for example, more people can take on than other CMS.
According to Joomla, Opencart and Bitrix - a very complex update process. For example, if you want to update the php version, or the CMS core, then most likely you will get an error. While on Wordpress you can update both the site and the plugins together.

Have you ever updated Joomla yourself?) Poke two buttons and that's it. But after updating Wordpress and plugins, catching a white screen and error 500 together, like giving a finger on the asphalt, knowing how this engine works with extensions and seeing the number of orders for restoring sites on Wordpress after the update, I would not stutter at all about the ease of updating on it. About Opencart there is not much more complicated than Joomla and I have never seen jambs when updating global ones. About Bitrix as about the dead, or good or nothing, so I will not say anything.
