Where is the copyright boundary for a font?

For example, there are hundreds of grotesque fonts in the world that differ from Helvetica in a couple of nuances.
Can I just as well take any commercial font, change some characters in the editor, and release it under my own name? At least for personal use? How do you present evidence to a judge in court that there is a kerning there, or a serif on the letter "U"?
How is the rights of the font owner protected? What does he refer to proving that the font is HIS? If its font is 99% the same as Helvetica?

Can the author of this unique question steal someone else's property and then hope that he will get nothing for it? Maybe.
But it would be better for him to read about the responsibility for this and, most importantly, to understand that the owner of the rights should not even justify the amount of damage caused by the actions of the author of this question.
