Where is the best place to host a forum?

There is one site. I want to attach a forum to it, I stopped before the question of placing the forum on a separate subdomain of the form forum.site.ru or site.ru/forum?
What are the pros and cons of each option?

site.ru/forum unequivocally and categorically

a subdomain has its advantages, a subdomain can be placed on another server, with a heavy load, this is a big plus.
