Where does the indentation of the first letter in the line in the sans font come from?

Here is the visual part of the problem.
In the line, the first letter is indented from the block border. This indentation is different for different letters and increases as the font-size of the text increases. The Times font has no such indentation.
The first thought was to use text-indent for such text, but different letters have different indent values and it didn't work to pick up text-indent.
I never thought about this behavior, and now it's interesting to understand why this is so?
