When working with 12 volts, 2 power supplies are made?

The situation is this, there is a motor that runs on 12 volts.
In such cases, do they make a separate power supply from 2 batteries, for the board (6 + resistor) and for the motor (12)?
Or is it possible to somehow power the board without burning extra amperes in a resistor from 12 volts?

There are linear converters that drain the excess into heat. There are more advanced switching DC-DC converters with high efficiency, but they are more expensive and require more parts.
