What to use as an indicator of site accessibility?

There are several unstable sites that work from time to time.
We need a program that would hang in the tray and periodically check the availability of the site and change, say, the picture in the tray from red to green. This already exists and I'm not looking well or will I have to come up with something terrible?

I use Ping-Admin for these purposes , but this is not a program, but a service that sends an email / sms when the site is not available. If you have desktop notifications configured when new mail arrives, then it turns out quite conveniently. Or set up SMS notifications.
