What software to install on an old computer?

There is an old Pentium 2 - 400 MHz, RAM - 64 megabytes. Winchester is determined by a maximum of 32 gigabytes, I can put 80, cutting down to these very 32. There is a monitor and a keyboard.
I would like to install some minimal system for my father so that he can play solitaire games on it. In terms of OS, I doubt between Windows 98 and Windows 2000. The latter is preferable, because. there NTFS and the system will fall less often. XP as I understand it will not take off on 64 MB of memory.
Your opinion? Maybe there are some assemblies specifically for weak computers? What other software or toys for old computers would you recommend?

Now there is a huge selection of lightweight Linux distributions!
Choose something on XFCE!
By the way, try also to find a BIOS update so that you can also see large disks.

Put win98 and 3 heroes there. You will only see Batu in the toilet.

Puppy Linux
If you add another 64MB, then you can even use some Mint Xfce , which will be quite modern.

The answer is completely off topic, but isn't it better to buy a nettop thread for little money and not torment relatives? Because with such hardware, a lot of restrictions will still come out in the end (with an Internet, with a monitor, with toys).

Xp without service packs will take off at 64 megabytes. A long time ago I put it on the first stump

2k loves memory very much, according to my feelings on mmx 225 MHz 192 MB it worked faster than on Cel 500 MHz 128 MB.

XP will work both without SP and with SP1 (SP2 / 3 too, but you can call it work with a stretch) I recently installed on the Cel266 only it makes little sense (with such a RAM, it will not be possible to do anything except solitaire)
If But to install the 2000th, then in principle it is already possible to work, moreover, there is a bunch of “relatively” modern software on it. (which the 98th cannot boast of) True, the games of those times (because the newer computers will not master) do not work very well under it. (some without dancing with a tambourine do not work at all, and some with dancing too)
In principle, the NT4 line can be considered as an option. Depending on the SP, its requirements for hardware between 95/98 / ME are an order of magnitude higher, but as in the case of 2000, to the detriment of compatibility with toys.
If you still plan games (such as NFS-3/4), you should prefer 98SE / Me

First, about all sorts of Linux: if you want to tinker, then this is it. No games will be needed - all the time will be spent on setup and support. I tried, I know - about 5 years ago, Duron 800 MHz + 512 MB had difficulty finding working options. Linux, which will work on P2 + 64, cannot be considered a desktop.
Secondly, you can try on such a piece of iron 98, 2K or XP. Feelings will, I think, not much worse than in the "first". That is, it will work, but apart from playing solitaire, there will be nothing special to do there. Well, or very old toys - to see what was in vogue when such a computer was considered cool. You can forget about browsers (relatively modern) or office (similarly).
I have about such a machine for quite a long time stood under the fryakha as a home proxy and torrent downloader. In the end, I replaced it with a newer one - I could hardly even cope with this. The biggest problem is memory. If you find an additive somewhere, it will be easier. But not much.

What do you advise here? Windows 9x? Win NT 4.0 is a great option, and it wakes up more stable than 9x.

And why put something on this computer at all? What is its purpose?

Yes, your car is a beast. A couple of years ago I was torn about what to put on a Pentium, just a Pentium (like 75) between linux + lxde and windows nt4. I settled on the option with windows.
From the software I installed some MS Office (like 95), ancient IE (5.0?), icq (2003, it seems even) and a 1by1 player. For the sake of the player, everything was started - the sound tore everything that was possible (apparently, then there were no court precedents for complaints about a high sound level).
