What size stick of RAM is best to buy?

The laptop has 4GB of RAM, which is better to buy - an 8GB chip for 12GB, or a 4GB chip for dual-channel mode?
PS The RAM in the laptop is soldered on the board

Dual-channel mode in the most resource-intensive (requires fast access to RAM) application - the 7zip archiver gives an increase of ~ 7%, while typical applications are on the verge of an error of 1-3%
For your tasks, more RAM is better, and 12GB is not enough for a developer, at least 16 (especially when you start deploying virtual machines)
