What should be used to store Android application data - cloud databases or databases on your own VPS?

There are ideas for several applications, and some of them need synchronization with a single database. For this, I plan to take some cheap XEN VPS for 500-1000 Gb of traffic, ~ 15-30 Gb hard drive and somewhere around 512-1024 MB of RAM. Also VPS will be used for websites/blogs.
Is it worth it? Will it be easy to change everything if suddenly the applications become popular and there is no more traffic?

It is much more reliable to use cloud databases, since the cloud service provider takes care of server maintenance. With VPS, there may be blocking from the hoster if they suddenly get hacked or get a virus.
VPS, on the other hand, provides great freedom - you can connect the database and run the site on different servers, and if power and rules allow, then at least a game server. Generally cheaper than providing the database as a cloud.
Naturally, all this is considered from the side of a novice developer and his simple projects that do not require large resources.
