I think the site is checking the Referer header, or javascript is checking the navigation history. If the transition occurred from the search page, the request is saved somewhere, so the site owner monitors what requests the traffic comes from.
True, as far as I know, lately PS have begun to hide the Referer, so perhaps the above is already outdated.
