What's with the yellow film around the CPU and GPU dies?

When disassembling the laptop, a translucent, yellowish film with a slot was found on the graphics chip and processor, from which only the crystal sticks out, and the chips themselves are all in the film. There is a suspicion that this is a thermal adhesive tape .. What can it be and what role does it play and in which case, what can it be replaced with? Thermal adhesive tape (kapton), so that smd capacitors do not come into contact with the radiator.
Possible without it
