What router is good at home for a geek these days?
The old router has already become, 2.4GHz in total, there are a lot of devices ...
And the requirements have grown. It is not clear what modern routers offer except for 20+ antennas and some mythical 100500 megabits for Wi-Fi.
There were administrative skills at the level of a hobby. I'm not afraid of consoles.

How about: https://mikrotik.com/product/RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT
I'll share my geeky version:
Mother: ASUS H110M-K
Proc: Intel Pentium G4560
Memory: Kingston HyperX FURY, DDR4, 2 x 4GB, overclocked to 2.4GHz
SSD: AMD Radeon R3 Series 60GB
HDD: WD Black 2TB (file server /backups)
Additional network card: TP-LINK TG-3468 (for LAN)
WiFi network card: TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 - antennas are scattered around the apartment with extension cables
OS: Debian 9 (Linux 4.9)
hostapd - we make a
dnsmasq access point from the WiFi network card - dhcp server + dns cache
iptables - nat + firewall
openVPN - as a server for remote access to the home network,
manual configuration of interfaces (/etc/network/interfaces), bridge between LAN, WiFi and VPN
this is enough for a router, but I didn’t stop there ... I
bought a white ip from the
nginx provider - it sticks out with ports 443 and 80 and into the LAN - 80
node.js - personal site + automation (the same backups)
gitea - personal git
verdaccio - personal npm
self-written stray on go - server for STM32 controllers (Smart Home)
Samba -
Transmission file dump - torrent downloader (driven from node.js via cli interface)
stopped there for now
Mi router 3 has been at home for a long time. A budget and fairly stable router. With firmware, it can do a lot.
Together with dlink 860L they distribute the Internet in the apartment. Everything suits me.
for a geek, probably open-wrt, you can do anything and however you like, install a bunch of packages.
Well, pick up the iron under the load.
Here Mikrotik is advised - I warn you: the implementation of ovpn leaves much to be desired that even udp does not support.
As an alternative to Mikrotik, Asus has older models that are not bad, there are firmware.
Xiaomi mi mini, don't take a triple, flash padavan or openwrt and boom as much as you like, hardware - maybe a lot)
And if it’s completely for a geek for a bunch of things (and not very cheap), then you can look at Turris Omnia :
It’s hard to imagine what such a piece of iron can not cope with ...
If you don’t want to sweat a lot with the setting, then definitely Zyxel Keenetic Ultra II ( https://keenetic.com/ru/zyxel-keenetic-ultra-2). If you want to play around with a bunch of settings, then Mikrotik hAP ac ( https://mikrotik.com/product/RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT).
