What protocol is optimal for hosting a remote encryption container?

There is a remote server under Linux, a ping to which 40 milliseconds. A client from Windows connects to it via CIFS over PPTP, and mounts the remote image in truecrypt.
The problem is speed and stability: pptp eats up half of the channel, CIFS under Linux is also not the fastest, and even lags because of not the best ping. Plus, all this itself does not rise after a connection break - there are open files on the server, you need to restart samba or wait until it falls off by timeout.
I thought maybe there are options more stable and faster? It is a matter of principle to place the container remotely, everything else can be redone.
What do you advise?

@Insaned

if there are no problems with losses - openvpn (udp) + nfs will be more cheerful
, perhaps it makes sense to block transfer the container with some kind of sync to the client and mount it there
