What OS to install for an old laptop?

Hello. In the presence of a laptop of the bearded 2006 Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2HRP / B: Intel Core Duo t2300 1.66ghz processor, 1gb RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card.
Actually, it now has XP from the old owner (got it as a carcass), which lags terribly and does not even allow you to watch videos on YouTube. What OS to install so that you can surf the Internet without problems?
And do I need to install some drivers with a new OS (a disk with drivers in the trash according to the owner)?
And it’s also desirable to have detailed instructions, otherwise I’m pretty bad at computers ><
Thank you for your attention and thanks in advance for your answers.

1GB and "no problem" in 2016 are incompatible concepts. Add RAM, and there is already a taste and color. If there is no experience in Linux, then it’s not worth tormenting the hardware, something may not get up behind the prescription, it’s not right to get up, etc. Therefore Win7.

xubuntu 14.04 LTS
I'm currently using it. It takes about 270 MB of RAM. Drivers and so on will be installed automatically. You can download it here
Further, everything is standard, write the image to a USB flash drive, run it through the BIOS. Installation is not difficult.

XP Embedded. For example this one - rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4608566
I was also looking for what to put on N270, 1 GB. All these mints, ubunts, kubunts, bubunts and other riots go through the forest - everything slows down. Only on a truncated xp you can watch YouTube without brakes.

Since PC maintenance is clearly not your forte, and the age of the beech is already advanced, then find a specialist and let him do everything. Sonek needs to clean the CO and update the BIOS. The usual 7-ka will completely turn the Internet, especially if you kill the flash banners. Good luck.

As for me - leave the current system, just clean the trash out of it, defragment the disk and finish the RAM at least up to 4 GB. If you don’t want to leave XP, then it’s better to catch up to 8.1 or 10 - they are less demanding on resources than 7.
In general, I wrote a couple of more detailed posts on this topic (although it’s not all about laptops, but also useful info) .
