What OS (not windows) can be installed on an old DELL Latitude D631?

Hello!
I wanted to install elementary OS on DELL Latitude D631 , but it won't install.
Here is my question on stackexchange.
Is it still possible to install it without bothering too much with this process, so that all devices work, or is it better not to get involved and not waste time?
And the second question, in continuation of the first one, for comfortable web development, what can be installed not from the windows family so that it really works fine on this laptop? Now it's win7, but the performance is not satisfactory (there is an SSD drive, AMD Turion TL-60 and 2 gigs of RAM - all standard stuffing).
Is there a way to make a laptop drastically faster?
