I began to notice that some sites have ww3 .site.com in the address bar. What is it and what's the catch?

There are many options for what exactly the author of this site used it - ask him himself.
news.mail.ru - doesn't bother you? And ww3.site.com is confusing for some reason. You can do w28.site.com.

Same joke as lk.*, api.* etc. Just another subdomain to distribute requests.
