vSAN is something like RAID over the network. vSAN currently supports RAID 1 and RAID 5/6
Used to provide an availability mechanism for virtual machines. vSAN Witness resolves ownership of virtual machine resources in the event of a failure. If more than 50% of the components that make up the VM's storage object are available, the VM is still available. If less than 50% of the VM components are available, it will no longer be available to the vSAN cluster/storage. Therefore, witness objects play a critical role in ensuring that the greater than 50% rule is in effect for vSAN component objects and determines the ownership of the VM object in the event of a failure.
