What is the purpose of the Java Native Interface?

Ku geez.
I decided to delve a little into Java and read that JNI support was canceled in the JVM implementation from Microsoft MSJVM, explain who fumbles for Java, the meaning and principle of JNI and why Microsoft took such a step.
