If you are a developer with people management skills and have the makings of a manager (character), know how to quickly switch between contexts, know how to find good and bad sides in people, and so on, you have a chance to become a PM, and later a director, but without the makings and character, it will be very difficult, because. unlikely to be able to change.

Sometimes it's very short, sometimes it's very long :) Stratoplane has a blog on Habré and free books. They just write about it.
Grow yourself, read books on project management, time management, people management, psychology, goal setting, etc. Try to practice all of this.
Do not forget that in our country "connections" (communication skills) (and in other countries it is called the buzzword networking) decide a lot :)

Good Programmers rarely become directors, because Good Programmers love to code, and managers don't have time to code.

The easiest way to become a director is to open your own company, and then no matter what skills you have, you will be a director. Of course, without skills, you won’t go far, but still.
In general, management is the same job as any other. It is taught in institutes. If you want to be a manager, study office work as a manager, and look for a job in your specialty.
Natural tendencies and the ability to manage people certainly give a head start, but in the end, the one who knows his business and makes diligence and studies is really good. And talent alone won't get you far. But this is good. This goes to show that if you want to be a manager and you don't have the talent, you still have a chance to be a good director.

FROM any
and so nothing prevents you as a pro from opening your office and immediately into the kings, that is, into the director.

IT directors are different.
There are managers, and there are technical directors.
The first ones grow out of development team leads, usually (long, tedious, blah blah).
The second - from admins, architects, SRE (from devops - not very much).
But yes, it all depends on luck.
