What is the most popular CMS for an online store in Russia?

At work, I was instructed to develop an online store (not by myself, but to find a contractor, decide on a platform and work with the contractor on behalf of the company). One of the conditions set by the management is to choose the most popular platform for an online store in the Russian Federation, and to look for a contractor based on this platform.
After reading a lot of recommendations on engines, I would stop at Bitrix or Magento.

Actually a question. And what is the most popular platform for creating an online store in Russia?

If we talk about CMS with e-commerce functionality, then the most popular will be paid Bitrix and free WordPress. If we are talking about specialized tasks for these tasks, then OpenCart. Proof 1 , proof 2 .
And now, as to your question in essence. Choosing a platform based only on its popularity is a very bad idea. Yes, the risks associated with a possible change of vendor are immediately reduced. But there are a bunch of other factors to take into account:

  • cost of license (ownership)
  • development (implementation) cost
  • the price of extensibility (there are more, there are less flexible), which can be important even if your requirements are specific
  • security
  • quality and level of support, community size

And so it can go on for a long time.
As for Bitrix. He is criticized a lot for the quality of the code, the problems of extensibility and refinement due to outdated architecture, the quality of technical support, and the cost of ownership.
Magento. This is an enterprise level with corresponding prices and the same monstrosity as in the case of Bitrix. You can start with a free license, but as soon as the functionality is not enough, you will have to fork out for a paid one. Just look at the price tag and see if your project needs it.

In general, there is an opinion that Magento is not worth approaching without a budget of $100k. Because the cost of a license will seem ridiculous in comparison with the cost of a qualified developer for this platform.
Do not even listen to advice about self-writing, which and only they are the most flexible. To get involved in a self-written story, you first need to understand why you need it? In addition, the qualifications of the team that must develop the self-writing itself dictates the corresponding high rates for the work. This is a very slippery slope. Starting a new and, especially, a small project from scratch on self-writing would be suicide.
For my part, I recommend taking a look at the relatively young Shopaholic platform . It is based on October CMS, which is the most popular CMS built on top of the Laravel Framework. This framework has a lot of power and flexibility, and all this will be available to you in the case of October + Shopaholic. This bundle has been gaining popularity lately and even eminent publications like Smashing Magazine - Building An E-Commerce Site With October CMS And S... are already writing about it .

You need to look not for the most popular one, but for the one that meets your functional requirements, otherwise Bitrix may not work either)

I would recommend you to do it not on cms, but on a framework (YII, Symfony, Laravel). The framework will provide a much more flexible system in terms of expansion. In the future, if the question of expanding the functionality arises, you will benefit more from the point of view of the business model. I know one large Russian online store, they have a store on Bitrix, there was a need to expand the functionality, they have not been able to find normal specialists for half a year. Look for the best private specialists who specialize in the development of these frameworks

I would choose CS-Cart if the store is more or less serious. Possibly Bitrix.
