What is the meaning of the \\?\ construct preceding a path in Windows operating systems?

Examples:

md "\\?\C:\PRN"
ECHO QWERT > "\\?\C:\cantTouchThis."

In both cases, file system objects will be created that are not difficult for Explorer to digest.
