What is the difference between favorite directories and the virtual panel in Total Commander?

The keyboard shortcut ctrl + d brings up favorite directories, a handy thing, but I found an interesting plugin called virtual panel

VirtualPanel is a temporary panel implementation for Total Commander. It's kind of like a virtual folder for storing links to frequently used files and interacting with them like real files, not like links.

It became interesting in what cases is Virtual Panel better than selected directories and what is the cardinal difference?
