What is the difference between "day visitors" and "new" in LiveInternet statistics?

From the description on the statistics page:

Visitors per day: The number of unique visitors per day.
New: Visitors who visited the site for the first time on that day or have not been on the site for 31 days.

I can't figure out what the difference is, can someone tell me?

If I'm right, I'll give you an example:
Visitors per day: 50 people came in
New: 10 people came in.
In total, 50 people have logged in today, 10 of them are new or have not logged in for a month.

Visitors per day - each visitor is counted once, regardless of the number of visits that day.
