What is the current state of affairs with keywords in search engines?

"People are divided into two categories" (c).
So, some believe that currently search engines do not take into account keywords. Others, on the contrary, dance that we are D'Artagnans, and everyone around ...
I don’t want to breed a holivar in any way - I want to get a reasoned answer to the question posed. Does it make sense to specify this meta tag with a non-empty or any value? And how important it is for search engine optimization in our difficult times.

What's the argument here? Now the main search engines easily evaluate the content of pages on their own, before the tag helped them in this, but now it has lost its relevance.

Set up an experiment.
Do it like this
Repeat the experiment 3 times (for a non-competitive market, for a moderately competitive one, and for a very competitive one).
And everything will fall into place.

Google does not support the Keywords meta tag.
It makes sense for Google not to specify this meta tag so as not to create garbage in the document.

Now large sites use keywords less and less, so as not to reveal the secrets of promoting their sites.
