What is the best way to organize a server for 1s?
The office asked to prepare a server for 1c enterprise.
They said only the system requirements of the machine:
4 cores (2200 MHz) and 8 g of RAM.
In this regard, several questions arise.
What is better to choose as a server? Regular PC or server?
Can I buy a regular computer and install Microsoft server 2012 on it?
Ubuntu chief does not even want to consider.
How justified is the purchase, for example, of such a server ?
(not the best ready-made option, because there is only one hard disk, therefore it is impossible to organize a raid 1)
What else needs to be installed on the server for 1s to work correctly?
What is the best way to organize backups?
Do you need another server for this, or can you get by, for example, with an accountant's computer?
Also, in addition to the accountant, it is planned to work with 1s for several more employees (up to 6 people, including the accountant).
All employees will be located within the same network and one office.
Prior to that, I organized a perfectly working mail server in the cloud at Digital Ocean.

Have you thought about renting 1C, which will be located in the cloud from a service provider? In this case, you will not have a headache at the expense of hardware, backups and all necessary licenses.
For 6 people, even half of the specified configuration is enough (unless, of course, they are developers).
> What is better to choose as a server? Regular PC or server?
Server hardware is more reliable and productive, but also more expensive. If there are funds, it’s better, of course, to organize on it - but is it worth it to buy a computer for a few kilobucks just to deploy 1C for several accountants who will provide a peak load once a month, and then slowly send payments the rest of the time?
> Can I buy a regular computer and install Microsoft server 2012 on it?
Of course, the server axis is not required at all.
> Ubuntu chief does not even want to consider.
I fully support it (I'm not an ubuntu-fob, but you shouldn't shove the desktop axis anywhere and hang extra functions on it). For nix server - Debian, FreeBSD. Who is bored - Gentoo or Ubuntu.
> How justified is the purchase, for example, of such a server?
(not the best ready-made option, because there is only one hard drive, therefore it is impossible to organize raid 1)
Again, the question is - will this configuration be loaded at least 10%? The main load will be once a month and mainly on the percentage / RAM.
> What else needs to be installed on the server for 1s to work correctly?
Nothing more, it's a waste of resources. The main thing is the network. The first step is to check that the link is gigabit - otherwise no hardware will save. No hubs or switches. Ring and recompress the twisted wire.
> What is the best way to organize backups?
SQLAndFtp is enough.
> Do you need another server for this, or can you get by, for example, with an accountant's computer?
Really there is no separate server - faylopomoyki with a samba and an array for "especially important"? In any case, storing backups on the same disk with accounting "toys" or other services is evil (storing backups on the same disk with the database is generally pointless) - just one launch of vault - and you can go to the pharmacy: for Corvalol for the director / accountant and vaseline for myself. Two "red" two-terabytes from a two-letter manufacturer will cost about 14k wooden ones at the moment - but peace of mind is more expensive. By the way, it will not be superfluous to rent a VPS or a cloud outside the Russian Federation and periodically upload password-protected archivers there. In addition, the server will be useful for other purposes...

Well, that means you won't need a VPN :) Don't forget to set up a firewall.
server/non-server : may be a prejudice, but server software is a server; a different quality of hardware, greater performance, the ability to expand
regarding the server configuration - I agree with handbrake , it is detailed
about the database : 6-8 people is a borderline number when using MSSQL is already recommended, but you can still work on a file database. If there are no specialists in MSSQL, start with a file database, if you feel problems with the performance of the database, switch to MSSQL. By the way, if you work with MSSQL, I recommend moving database files and transaction logs to different disk arrays - performance increases significantly. Still, for MSSQL, I strongly recommend that you read and implement.
backups: for file, use the built-in 1C tools - there is all the necessary functionality (but it will be required that all users log out of the system); for MSSQL databases - built-in DBMS tools, they are faster than 1C ones and do not require expelling users. It is always better to store backups on a separate device with a RAID array (a network storage from WD with a couple of disks with RAID1 support is suitable). No need to give storage of backups at the mercy of the user
SQL bases put, file hemorrhoids. And the server can also be understood on a regular Windows, if only the hardware is pulling, put ssd by the way, it will open in a couple of seconds
I came across a question to which I know the answer and I see that these people helped me more than one ( efsol.ru/solutions/enterprise-cloud.html). On my own behalf, I can add that my company (JSC "FOZZI-PHARM") has been switching to the 1C cloud server for a year now, our 1C 7.7 with the SQL / DBF database is there (the databases have not yet been transferred to SQL at all points) and for this year, apart from two maintenance works, not a single failure, and one lost bit of information. I advise from the bottom of my heart.
