What is the best platform to develop MMO (one big game world) games?

Interested in a developed server side. Good scaling and performance. Convenient deployment. Preferably free

MMOs are different, for example, I write in pure asp.net mvc, so I don’t understand what a “developed backend” is. Check out the Windows Azure platform, it's built for easy scalability.
