What is the best lightweight environment?

There is a low power laptop with Debian on board. What DE can you advise to install? Already tried xfce and lxde.

Easier than xfce and lxde, probably just some bare WM.
Once I installed Arch x86_64 and over xfce. With the lamp stack running on the local PC, about 150 MB of RAM was consumed.

Or collect something of your own on openbox, or master tile managers.

IBM t42 Celeron 1.7 512mb ram .. linux + i3wm + vim, although the sublime drags fine. But the browser eats everything else, and asks for supplements :-(

I also use IceWM on powerful ones. Because it’s a very decent window manager: it almost doesn’t eat resources + it’s perfectly customizable (I completely turned off unnecessary window decoration and set all the necessary things to keyboard shortcuts).
