In any case, the main thing is that the slicer understands it.
Slicers work with the STL file format. Therefore, you need to save the model for printing in this format. Almost any 3D editor can export to this format on its own or using plugins.

It's better to model in the one you own.
And then, from tasks. For it is one thing to model components and assemblies, and quite another - all sorts of figures.
For the first one, I use Solidworks myself. But I don’t need the second))

In general, I don’t use 3dMax, because it is rather complicated.
There is no universal program, different solutions are suitable for each type of model.
I use SketchUp - for the initial construction of architecture and creating logos, voluminous texts.
Meshmixer - these are various
Geomagic effects, Zbrush - modeling and refinement of scanned models of people.
TinkerCad - quick creation of mounts for toys, gears for mechanisms.
To each his own.

Regarding the "assemblies and assemblies" mentioned above, if you need exactly this type of model and:
if you are a software engineer (or like to program) by mind, then the best choice is OpenSCAD www.openscad.org . (free)
if you are a mechanical engineer then FreeCAD www.freecadweb.org/wiki/?title=About_FreeCAD (free)
