An SNMP trap is a special signal sent by a device that supports the SNMP protocol. As a rule, such signals are sent by devices in order to notify the network administrator about the occurrence of some critical events. For example, some types of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) can send an SNMP trap when the equipment goes into UPS battery mode. As a rule, such situations require the immediate intervention of service personnel and therefore the device itself initiates the sending of a signal via the SNMP protocol. Another example is some models of tamper-evident sensors and equipment racks. These sensors can be connected to a local network and support sending SNMP traps in critical situations, such as unauthorized opening of a door, for example.
