What is Portmap used for and can it be disabled completely?

Hello. I can not find what portmap is used for besides NFS. The hoster sent a letter that DDOS attacks are being carried out through the portmapper and my server is infected. I don't use NFS. Can I completely disable portmap and what else might it affect? VPS, CentOS, we host regular sites.

Just drop this port from the outside using iptables and everything will be fine.
