What is Core Storage volume in OS X and why is it needed?

Recently, when solving HDD issues, I needed to disable Core Storage in the main hard disk partition. Is it worth turning it back on? What is it at all, and why is it needed?

Core Storage is an abstraction layer that combines multiple physical disks as one logical one. Used for Apple Fusion
