What is better to create automatic backup AWS RDS or replication?

The point is the following. There are several databases (each ~ 5GB if doing mysql_dump). The relevance to some of them is 15 minutes (the size of this database is smaller, about 1GB).
Question: What is the best way to solve this problem?
Doing an automatic backup through mysql_dump means hanging the database for 10-15 minutes. Doing replication costs money.
Can anyone suggest other options? Or tell who and how implemented?
