What is a 1C template directory? How is it different from config?

Good evening everyone!
I can not give myself a definition of "what is a directory of templates?". I do not quite understand its difference from the configuration.
After all, when updating the configuration, we set the template directory, and then update it from the configurator.
Tell me, please, in an accessible language what and how. I am confused by these definitions.
