What happens if you install RAM with a higher frequency than the motherboard allows?

I have i5-9400f and asus tuf B360M-PLUS GAMING,
both have a maximum frequency of 2666 MHz, I want to install a new RAM at 3333 MHz, can it work at this frequency?

There are exactly two main options:
- or it won't take off at all.
- or will work at a reduced frequency.
on some mothers and some memory modules it will be able to work at full (or close) frequency, but you should not count on it.
