What education does a designer need?

Good afternoon.
My friend has now graduated from high school and is choosing where to go to study further. He wants to work as a designer (web, polygraphy). As you know, a designer is not only someone who can draw well (by the way, he has a completed art education), but also means the principles of interface design.
I understand that designers, like programmers, get most of their knowledge by self-education. But I would like education to be specialized and at least somehow help. I myself did not receive a tower, so I have no idea what to answer at all.
Tell me, what is the name of the specialty, the receipt of which will be useful for the designer? If there is no such narrow focus, maybe there are related ones that will be useful?

Usually people choose either art education or industrial design.
There are also a lot of designers with engineering education.

You need a good education.
If there is no opportunity to get into at least the first hundred of the best universities in the world ( www.shanghairanking.com/ru/ARWU2014.html ), then there is no point in it. What's the point of learning from the bad?
Self-education is also good education. Especially with quality courses from good universities.
