Actually the question is, what does this characteristic depend on? Audio card or headphones?

From everything.
1) The sound file must support 7.1. Otherwise, get automatic channeling.
2) The player must support this file format (not sure, but most likely).
3) The audio card and its driver must support 7.1.
4) The audio system (headphones or speakers) must support 7.1.
