What do you think is a good external hard drive?

A disk that is reliable enough that I can use it regularly, and then pass it on to my grandchildren in working order.
Which one is better?

In the singular, none. The best disk is N disks, of which one is in use, and the remaining N-1 disks contain a copy of the data from the used one.
If we talk about brands, then from external 2.5" I would take Toshiba. But buying Toshiba is not a guarantee of the eternal life of the disk and an indulgence for the absence of backups.

If you want, you can look at statistics on disks. There, in sufficient detail, in the context of quarters, by models, the experience of one of the large firms is described.
True, external ones are not considered there, but manufacturers are all represented.
At the same time, you need to understand that any drive can fail, storing the required information on it in a single copy is a bad option.
In my understanding, a good external drive is any successfully purchased (discount, additional or bonus software subscription. It is desirable that the drive be with a SATA connector and a usb 3 adapter. Disks with a soldered USB controller alarm me.

I advise you to take any laptop internal HDD that suits you in terms of price, reliability and other parameters, and enclose it in a box with a USB-3 tail (USB-2 is no longer relevant).
I'll explain why. But because internal disks are produced in much larger quantities, so they are technically polished (i.e. they have higher reliability), and for the same reason they are cheaper (even with the addition of the box price).
Well, as a bonus - you can have several disks of stuffing for one box, and rearrange them if you wish. This is also a way to save some money.
