What could be the problem with the player?

There is an ad player for the store, written in tcl. Ads spin every 10-20 minutes. Background music plays in between.
The problem is that sometimes the background track is simply silent (it shows that the track is playing, but there is no sound), or jumps from track to track. And sometimes it jumps without starting the playback of the track, and sometimes after some time after the start of playback.
The player is a wrapper for mplayer. The snack library is also used: start playback, stop, control sound.
There are no problems with the logs.
Version gnome 2.30.2
Distributor: debian
Build date 11/12/2010
What could be the reason for this?
If you run on windows, there are no such problems.
Unfortunately, I can't post the source code.

@DancingOnWater

It looks more like a codec issue.

Maybe a problem with the sound drivers? I would start by temporarily throwing in something else instead (as a USB sound option).
