Are the rights okay? Who owns /var/run/mysqld?
Check that there is a user under which you run mysqld.
If the user is different, then:
chown -R mysql:mysql /var/run/mysqld
And add
log = /var/log/mysqld.log to the mysql config (usually /etc/my.cnf) in the [mysqld] section
And see according to the log that goes wrong.
