What are the best programs to use to block distracting resources?

In the course of work, we are often haunted by the desire to sit on Facebook, post our lunch on Instagram or tweet about our work (we are talking about empty chatter, not real discussion of problems).
What software is better to use to block these and other resources? I used to just use the htaccess file under Windows, but surely there are better methods?
