VMWare is extremely slow, how to improve and what is the limit? (Mac OS X on Win8, details inside)?

Host - Core i5 3570K (3.4 GHz), 16Gb RAM, Win8 x64 I'm
using Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 on VMWare 10.
Allocated 4 Gb RAM and 2 cores, disk in one file and placed on a separate HDD, which is not used in the host.

The problem is that it works very slowly, each operation has a very large delay, compilation takes many times longer compared to the MacBook Pro (Core i7-4850HQ 2.3 GHz), and simply compared to compiling under Win8 on the host itself.

The question is - what could be the reason and is it possible to correct the situation? And what's the performance limit compared to the host machine?

@Neovet

Maybe the HDD is the reason? I hope it's not external to USB 2.0?
