vlc does not start under mac os snow leopard

After launch, an icon appears in the Mac tray, but there is no program itself, you can only kill it from the tray, what to see, where to dig?
I’m completely new to Mac, the system rather friendly hides almost all the stuffing from me and it’s impossible to understand what and how right away.

Never had a problem with vlc in either Leo or SnowLeo or Lion.
See what is written to /var/log/system.log at startup
