Visualization of scan data?

Hello Khabrovites.
Has anyone done visualization of object scan data?
There is a set of sections - object layers in the form of images - real matrices. The value in the matrix characterizes the density of the biological tissue at a point. I would like to visualize this dataset as a point cloud with the ability to view it layer by layer.
Please advise what technologies to use and how to implement viewing in arbitrary sections?
