There is a laptop with Ubuntu installed and a broken monitor (the image is recognizable, but randomly shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow). Now I use an external stationary monitor, but I don’t really want to drag it with me on a trip. There is a second laptop with Windows 7 installed.
The task is to use the second laptop as an external monitor for the first one.
I understand that there are different programs for remote access. Perhaps there are some more convenient solutions (connect them with some tricky wire)? If not, what program should I use for remote access from Windows on ubuntu?

The easiest way to get a working Linux system on a second laptop is to run it from a live flash drive. There are a lot of different distributions (at least the same knoppix) that have images ready for writing to a USB flash drive (you can write from Linux using dd or from a mastdayka by some tricky means).
After downloading such an image and writing it to a USB flash drive (especially convenient - on SDHC, so that nothing sticks out of the USB connectors), you will have a full-fledged Linux environment on your wife's laptop, without touching what is already installed there.
Well, having two laptops with Linux, you can split the screens either using an ssh session, or using remote X access, or one of the many other ways.
PS When working even on a 100-megabit connection, if you use a short cable without intermediate hubs-switches, the speed practically does not suffer (unless, of course, you don't drive quad with openGL broadcast over the network).
